Santa Monica College wants to show off a talented student’s work this month. SMC will present a photography exhibit of mentor student Sachi Kato’s works — a collection of painterly images that are shot on film and digitally manipulated. The exhibit will run from Nov. 28 to Dec. 16.

“Tranquility” features moody and surrealistic still-lifes and portraits and will be in the SMC photography Gallery, located on the second floor of Drescher Hall, 1900 Pico Blvd. The opening reception will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3. Kato is currently in SMC’s Arts Mentor Program, which provides gifted students an opportunity to work one-on-one or in small groups with a mentor. Her mentor is adjunct SMC photography professor Blue Fier.

With a focus on fine art photography, Kato creates a unique aesthetic, with a style that is reminiscent of early photography. Her still-lifes and portrait work evoke a moody atmosphere, and the subtle colors make associations with Japanese art and culture.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. For information, call (310) 434-4289.
