Memorial Day will be celebrated in Santa Monica Elks style. At 8 a.m. on each Memorial Day, the Santa Monica Elks place U.S. flags and flags that represent the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks on graves at the Elks Rest portion of Woodlawn Cemetery. The central flag is raised to full height and then lowered to half-mast.
At 11 a.m., the ceremonies begin. This year, there will be presentations of wreaths and flowers by the Santa Monica Police Department, the Santa Monica Fire Department, Ken Miller, president of the Santa Monica Emblem Club No. 154, and Bob Jacobs, past commander of American Legion Post No. 123, and other fraternal and service groups.
After the services, people are invited to the Santa Monica Elks Lodge at 1040 Pico Blvd. for a barbecue lunch, which is priced at $8.
Artistic Santa Monica College students are exposing themselves to the public. The Santa Monica College Annual Student Art Exhibit, featuring various media, will continue at the college’s Pete & Susan Barrett Art Gallery and the SMC Photography Gallery. The art gallery is located at the Madison campus, Santa Monica Boulevard at 11th Street. This exhibit will continue until June 3.
