Gallery oozes experimentation

Walk through a retrospective of works by Robert Rauschenberg, named an “American Master”by PBS. Rauschen-berg’s enthusiasm for popular culture and his rejection of the angst of the abstract expressionists led him to embrace materials traditionally outside the artist’s reach. From the mid ’60s through the ’70s, he experimented in prints by using aluminum, moving Plexiglas disks, clothes and other surfaces. He challenged the view of the artist as auteur by assembling engineers to help in the production of pieces technologically designed to incorporate the viewer as an active participant in the work.

Throughout the ’80s and ’90s, Rauschenberg concentrated primarily on collage and new ways to transfer photographs.

His new exhibit is on display through Aug. 12. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Saturday 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. The gallery is located at Bergamot Station, 2525 Michigan Ave., suite G4. For more information, visit www.ikonltd.com.
