Headlines on page 3 [on Tuesday, May 6] made a values statement or, maybe, a statement about the editor’s perception of community values. In very large letters it was announced that the high school baseball team was one game away from winning a regional conference title. Next to this story, with a much smaller headline, was the outstanding news that the high school science team was number one nationally.
What message does this send to our children? Obviously, the more important achievement would get the bigger headline spread three quarters of the way across the page. Wouldn’t any reasonable person think so?
I don’t know if I am angry or sad or insulted at this perception of our values. I do hope that in other venues and other ways these outstanding science students get the recognition they deserve. They surely have my respect and admiration.
