Noted musician/composer Howlett Smith’s acclaimed musical cantata, “The Carpenter,” will be presented by the First Presbyterian Church of Santa Monica on Sunday, Nov. 12, at 3 p.m.
“The Carpenter” is a two-act production portraying in music and narrative the life of Christ, from birth to death to resurrection. It incorporates an eclectic mix of gospel, spiritual, jazz and traditional musical styles.
Performers include the 20-voice Harmony Choir, actor/singer Rod Perry, featured soloists, and narrators, supported by the Howlett Smith Trio.
Church Deacon Jim Jenkins is hosting the event as a tribute to his late wife Ruth, who was a longtime member of the church choir and an ardent admirer or Smith’s musical talents. Jenkins noted that “Nov. 21 will mark our 53rd wedding anniversary, and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate it than sharing her faith and love for music with those who knew her and other who can enjoy this amazing cantata.”
A reception with refreshments will be held after the performance to give atten-dees the opportunity to meet Smith and the cast members. Admission is free with a donation at the door of two cans of food. The collected food will be given to the Westside Food Bank in Santa Monica.
The First Presbyterian Church is located at 1220 Second St. Parking is available on the street or at the municipal parking garage across from the church. For more information, call (310) 451-1303.
