Los Angeles County Supervisors Lindsey P. Horvath and Kathryn Barger have introduced a motion to create the first dedicated interfaith chaplain position in the county Department of Mental Health.
The position is intended to strengthen connections between mental health services, faith-based organizations and community providers serving people experiencing homelessness and other vulnerable populations.
"If we are ever to meaningfully address the mental health crises facing our communities, LA County must invest in and connect with the sources of strength that help people heal," Horvath said. "Faith leaders are often trusted voices for people who face barriers to accessing care. The goal is to connect more people to the support they need while respecting every individual's beliefs and needs."
The chaplain would help bridge gaps between trusted faith communities and mental health services, particularly for people experiencing homelessness who face barriers to accessing care. The motion also establishes a voluntary faith-based subcommittee to strengthen outreach, connect residents to services and coordinate existing community efforts. All spiritual support would be voluntary and inclusive of diverse beliefs and backgrounds.
"Healing doesn't happen in a vacuum," Barger said. "For many people, faith is part of it. By bringing a Chaplain into the Department of Mental Health, we're meeting people where they are and partnering with the faith communities already serving them."
