Housing ‘victims’ are bogus

Published:

By Helen R. McRoskey Santa Monica

I just don’t have much sympathy for those two fellows who are claiming, erroneously in my view, that the city is discriminating against them (“Tough to find housing,” April 10).

One unemployed man claims he was victimized when the city directed him to an affordable apartment in an area he doesn’t want to live in. And the other so-called “victim” bellyaches that the city would not change the operating hours and procedures everyone else has to follow just to suit his schedule.

What a load of nonsense! I’m bewildered at this sense of entitlement some people in this community have, that exactly what you want must be handed to you when and how you want it.

Firstly, most of the apartments owned by the community housing corporation are located in the Pico Neighborhood. This concentration has been a point of contention for some in this community for years. But it is what it is and where it is, and if you don’t want to live in that housing, as this fellow evidently did not, then you can always live on the streets — or Santa Barbara, as luck should have it. But stop whining when someone is offering you a handout.

To the other fellow: Grow up and be a responsible adult. Do what the rest of us have to do — show up when you, and everyone else for that matter, is told to. Stop your griping.
