The Santa Monica Historical Society is flexing some muscle. “Muscle Beach, Santa Monica,” an exhibition presented by the Santa Monica Historical Society Museum, opens May 4. The exhibition of vintage photographs of the original Muscle Beach in Santa Monica between the 1930s and 1950s goes back to the beginning of the fitness “revolution” and how “Muscle Beach” began and earned international fame.
Located next to the Santa Monica Pier, Muscle Beach began in the early 1930s and bloomed over 20 years into an extraordinary entertainment of performances for thousands of spectators, city officials say. The exhibition re-lives a time of daring, creative, and original acrobatic performances and body-building on Muscle Beach.
The exhibit will be on display May 4 through Oct. 3, at the Santa Monica Historical Society Museum, 1539 Euclid St. For more information, call (310) 395- 2290.
