Leave the fireworks to the professionals

Published:

Whether tempted by explosive aerial rockets or seemingly “safe” sparklers, Santa Monica residents are discouraged from playing with fire as Independence Day draws near.

The Santa Monica Fire Department is reminding residents that fireworks are not only hazardous to public safety, but also illegal. Even fireworks purchased legally in other cities are not permitted for use in Santa Monica, due to a city-wide ban. Injuries such as permanent scarring, loss of vision and dismemberment often result from amateur fireworks use, a practice that also endangers bystanders and surrounding property. The National Fire Protection Association, a nonprofit that aims to protect the public from fireworks-related injuries and death, urges fireworks enthusiasts to leave the pyrotechnics to the professionals. Even at regulated shows, spectators should not approach leftover fireworks, as they may still be active and prone to explosion. Children should always tell an adult if they find fireworks, and move away from charred or burning materials.

One risk-free alternative on the Westside is the upcoming “Celebrate America” festival that will take place on Saturday, June 30, beginning at 5 p.m. The free festival honoring Independence Day features a controlled fireworks display by Pyro Spectaculars, and will be held at Santa Monica College’s Corsair Field on Pico Boulevard and 16th Street.
