A local library is recruiting tutors this summer to aid area students who need extra help.
The Fairview Branch Library is recruiting volunteer tutors for its 10th annual summer reading tutorial. Every volunteer is matched with a student in grades one through five, and the pair meet at the library, said librarian Sylvia Anderle. It helps to be a native English speaker, but no teaching knowledge or experience is needed. The library supplies tutors with books, worksheets, activities and continuing support.
Tutors often develop a warm relationship with their children, Anderle said. A typical session involves reading, speaking and writing. Volunteers offer warmth and patience, and communicate clear expectations to the students, Anderle said.
Anderle started the outreach program when she saw a need for free, community-based remediation for students who need individual attention. Most of the children enrolled have parents who are not English speakers, so the children need extra help to boost their reading skills.
Volunteers include high school or college students, professionals and seniors. They work with individual students at the library for one hour per week, and need to commit to the full six-week session. Hours are flexible. The application deadline for this summer is May 31.
To volunteer or for more information, call Anderle at (310) 450-0443. All volunteers 18 years old and over are required to be fingerprinted as part of a background check. Athletic excellence honored
