City councilmen and local officials are looking to avert a major homeless crisis by saving the emergency winter shelter program that serves the Westside. Union Rescue Mission, a non-profit homeless organization, had been requested to help assist coun-cilmembers Bill Rosendahl and Jan Perry and County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky and the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) to help save the Winter Shelter Program. Rosendahl and Perry sought an additional $30,000 to help fund the program.
LAHSA administers the winter shelter program, an initiative providing overnight shelter for the homeless each year between December and March. In the past, the program operated from West L.A. Armory, but this year, the program was almost bumped for actual National Guard Training.
