I was surprised by something I read in Winter Johnson’s front page story about Santa Monica’s 130-year history (SMDP, July 15, page 1). About one man who bought a town lot, your reporter wrote: “Zamoyski paid $500.” But another man who came to town is described this way: “Harris Newmark, a prominent Jewish wool merchant...”
Why did Winter Johnson (if that really is his/her name) identify Newmark as a Jewish merchant but left Zamoyski without any ethnic or stereotypical job identification?
Thanks for clearing this up.
Ocean Park (Editor’s note: The information was taken directly from a historical book, which described Newmark that way.)
