PICO NEIGHBORHOOD — Santa Monica’s first homicide of 2006 occurred here shortly after 9 p.m on Tuesday.

The Santa Monica Police Department responded to a call of shots fired in the 2600 block of Pico Boulevard at 9:21 p.m.

Officers found a Hispanic man in his early 20s with a gunshot wound to his upper torso. He was transported to a local hospital where he later died, police said.

The identification of the man is not known pending notification of next of kin.

At presstime, police hadn’t located a suspect or identified a motive for the murder.

It appears that the shooting may have occurred outside of a liquor store on the southeast corner of 26th street and Pico Boulevard.

After he was shot, the victim ran across the street and collapsed.
