A Santa Monica police officer shot and killed a man Saturday after he charged at officers with a knife in Palisades Park, police said.
Officers were in the 1400 block of Ocean Avenue investigating a reported domestic violence incident when a man not connected to that case ran at them holding a knife, according to police. An officer opened fire, striking the man.
Santa Monica Fire Department paramedics treated the man at the scene before he was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The officer was not injured.
The area remains an active crime scene as investigators collect evidence and conduct a preliminary investigation, police said. Police asked the public to avoid the area.
The Santa Monica Police Department said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
