Santa Monica Mayor Robert Holbrook and Malibu Mayor Andy Stern this week delivered meals to the homebound in their communities for Meals on Wheels West, joining 462 mayors across the country delivered meals on national “Mayors for Meals” day.

The Meals on Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) created the March for Meals campaign in 2000 to call attention to the problem of senior hunger in America. The month of March was chosen because it was during March 1972 that a law was passed to include senior meal programs in the Older Americans Act.

March for Meals is a national campaign in which Meals on Wheels West is a participant, to raise awareness of senior hunger and to encourage action on the part of the local community. Senior nutrition programs across the United States promote March for Meals in their local communities through public events, partnerships with local business, volunteer recruitment and fundraising initiatives.

Meals on Wheels West has been providing home-delivered meals to the ill, frail, disabled and senior person in Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades, Malibu and Topanga since 1974. Status check: Women look back on 25 years
