New laptops for city employees

IN THE DIGITAL AGE

Editor’s note: This story is part of an ongoing series that tracks the city’s expenditures appearing on upcoming Santa Monica City Council consent agendas. Consent agenda items are routinely passed by the City Council with little or no discussion from elected officials or the public. However, many of the items have been part of public discussion in the past.

City Hall could see approximately 600 new computers if the council decides to spend more than $1.9 million over the next four years to purchase and maintain new Hewlett Packard desktop units.

The purchase is part of a program where computers are replaced on a four-year cycle, keeping City Hall up-to-date with technological changes, improving staff productivity and efficiency.

“This is a common practice for governments and businesses with large computing environments,” according to a staff report.

The old computers cycled out of City Hall are donated to public schools as well as community service organizations.
