Santa Monica is mixing philanthropy and the silver screen through a series of nighttime drive-in movies this summer at the pier.
The Santa Monica Drive-in will feature five movies throughout the month of August to benefit the Cancer Relief Fund. The movies, which will be played every Tuesday, are Back to the Future, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, The Sting, Zoolander and West Side Story.
Organizers said last year’s events were extremely successful, featuring The Wizard of Oz, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Super Size Me, and a performance by The Henry Mancini Jazz Alumni Quintet. In addition, several celebrities, including Sandra Bullock and Cuba Gooding Jr., made appearances at the events.
All proceeds from the events support Arts Fighting Cancer programs and help fund the Cancer Relief Fund. Last year’s drive-in helped financially support more than 25 families going through treatment. Founded in 1999, Arts Fighting Cancer is a nonprofit organization that promotes the filmmaking and the arts while raising funds to benefit those fighting cancer, officials say.
The Santa Monica Drive-in begins Aug. 2 and ends on Aug. 30. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is free, but tickets are required to enter. Tickets can be found at the Santa Monica Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, 1920 Main St., suite B; the CVB kiosk in Santa Monica Place Mall and on the Third Street Promenade, as well as the visitor’s center at 1400 Ocean Ave. Call the CVB at (310) 319-6263 for more information, or check www.smff.com.
