This work week will be a shorter one for many of us, with Columbus Day still a federal public holiday. Banks, post offices and other government offices close their doors, though Santa Monica schools remain in session. Holidays reserved for the remembrance of such figures as Christopher Columbus, Martin Luther King Jr. and past presidents often spark discord about just who warrants a national day off in their honor.
So this week, Q-Line wants to know: “Who really deserves a holiday named in their honor?
Should schools and offices be closed for all of these honorary days, or has the calendar become clouded?
Is there a current holiday that should be eliminated?”
