One giant ‘leap’ for Pier Concert Series By Daily Press staff

Published:

Leaping into its fourteenth year, the Sunday Concert Series at the Santa Monica Pier will begin on “leap” Sunday with Barbara Morrison and the Daniel May Band.

All concerts start at 2 p.m. and are held — weather permitting — on the pier parking decks. The Sunday Concert Series has been a free event for the community for over a decade.

Here’s the lineup: ■Feb. 29: Barbara Morrison and the Daniel May Band, legendary jazz and blues ■March 7: Teresa James and the Rhythm Tramps, soulful rhythm and blues ■March 14: The Brasil-Brazil Show with Ana Gazzola and Sonia Santos, an all Brazilian extravaganza delivering the style, rhythm and flavor of the country’s culture. ■March 21: Surprise guest, to be announced ■March 28: West Side Crew, classic oldies Barbara Morrison has been featured on more than 20 recordings in almost every genre, from traditional jazz and blues to gospel and pop. Her melodic voice, with its two-and-a-half octave range, are known worldwide, as are her rich, unique, soulful and highly spirited interpretations of familiar jazz and blues classics and original contemporary tunes.

Teresa James is a powerful singer, a “healthier Janis Joplin,” whose sassy voice shows off great songs performed by some of LA’s top musicians. The Rhythm Tramps are Terry Wilson, bass and vocals; Billy Watts, guitar and vocals; Debra Dobkin, drums, percussion and vocals; James Cruce, drums and percussion; and Jerry Peterson, saxes and flute.

Ana Santos is known to enchant audiences with her velvety voice and her own compositions, while Sonia Santos gives a performance full of passion, color and over-flowing energy. Both ladies are backed up by a south-of-the-equator band with Gerard Barbut on keyboards; Zé Nogueira playing lead guitar; Paulo Gustavo on the bass; Sandro Feliciano, drums; Zane Musa, saxophone; and Claudinho Smile on percussion.

The concerts will continue through May 30. The shows are produced by the Santa Monica Pier Lessee’s Association and sponsored by Pepsi-Cola. Parking is available in most beach lots and the Tide Shuttle runs from downtown Santa Monica to the pier for 25 cents.
