Open house at American Cancer Society Discovery Shop

The American Cancer Society Discovery Shop in the Brentwood Country Mart is holding an open house celebration on Saturday, Oct. 11 to thank and honor the community for making their shop number one in the state for income growth. This 20 percent increase will help to better support cancer research as well as the many programs and services for cancer patients and their families.

What this increase won’t accomplish is allowing the Discovery Shop to remain in the Brentwood Country Mart. New building ownership and high rent increases are resulting in the search for a new location. As the American Cancer Society Discovery Shop embarks on its final calendar year in this space, it is reaching out into the community for leads and potential donors who can assist in finding them a new home.

“People come here and say, ‘I’ve been diagnosed with cancer, what do I do?’” said Terry Masi, the Discovery Shop manager, stressing the indispensable need for cancer treatment facilities. She hopes that this open house event will increase community awareness about the shop’s programs and objectives, as well as the present relocation troubles.

The first Discovery Shop was opened by the American Cancer Society in 1965, and 45 have been established throughout California since then. To raise money for cancer education and research, the stores accept a variety of upscale items for resale, including clothing, furniture, jewelry, and antiques.

The American Cancer Society Discovery Shop is located at 253 26th St. in Santa Monica. The event will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. There will be speeches made about the Discovery Shop and what they do to help control cancers, as well as cookies and refreshments for the guests. For additional information, contact the Shop Manager, Terry Masi, at 310-458-4490. For 24-hour cancer information, call 1-800-ACS-2345 or visit www.cancer.org.
