Get ready to rock and sway to the Santa Monica College beat. The SMC Emeritus College Band will present its “Pops” Concert — an eclectic program of classical, Broadway show tunes and more, taking listeners back in musical time. The 60-member concert band, part of SMC’s acclaimed Emeritus College for older adults, is under the baton of Wallace Umber.
On the program will be a wide range of pieces, including the Finale from Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion Final Chorus, and Sousa’s “Bride-Elect March.” Also featured will be selections from Cole Porter’s 1953 Broadway hit “can-can.” In addition, a tuba/euphonium quartet will play variations on “Yes, We Have No Bananas,” arranged by band member Barbara Saevig.
Awards for service will be presented to 22 band members who have played with Emeritus Band for 10 to 36 years. Umber founded the Emeritus Band in 1968. This event will take place on Sunday, June 12 at 3 p.m. the SMC Concert Hall, 1900 Pico Blvd. Admission and parking are free. For further information, call (310) 434-4306 or (310) 474-5271. It’s a big universe out there
