A parade to support public education in the wake of severe budget cuts will be held in Santa Monica on April 5.
Dubbed the Pink Slip Parade in honor of the 207 teachers, administrators, nurses, librarians, custodians, and service workers are receiving “pink slips” telling them they will be let go, the event will begin at 10 a.m., at Palisades Park at Wilshire Boulevard and Ocean Avenue.
The parade will march south through Palisades Park to Santa Monica Boulevard, then turn east to the Third Street Promenade, then south to culminate at Broadway Boulevard and Third Street for a brief assembly with speakers and music. Allow plenty of time to park and bring the whole family, neighbors and friends.
The Pink Slip Parade is a way for the community to come together and stress that, even in difficult and uncertain times, it believes that public education must be preserved and supported, according to a press release.
The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District is facing cuts of $13 million during this year and next.
The Pink Slip Parade is sponsored by the Santa Monica Malibu Council of PTAs, the Community for Excellent Public Schools, the Classroom Teachers Association, and SEIU.
