The Santa Monica Chapter of the American Red Cross (1450 11th Street) has added extra hours of operation to meet the needs of the public for making contributions to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort as well as volunteering to help out.

The chapter will be open one extra hour — from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. (instead of 5 p.m.) weekday evenings for the next two weeks. The Santa Monica Red Cross will take donations and volunteer sign-ups throughout the Labor Day weekend from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Instead of dropping by, those interested in contributing to the Hurricane Katrina disaster relief fund can mail a check to the Santa Monica chapter of the American Red Cross, 1450 11th Street, Santa Monica, CA 90401.

Checks should be made out to “American Red Cross” with the notation: “Katrina.” Or, donations can be made on-line by logging in at www.redcross.org.

Hurricane Katrina disaster relief containers will be available at a number of Santa Monica businesses and other popular locations for the next couple of weeks.

Volunteers are asked to sign up and attend an orientation meeting which includes a 3-hour class covering working a disaster and Red Cross policies and procedures. Orientations and classes are scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 1 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 10, at 10 a.m.
