“Jerry Rubin’s Big Blue Bus Birthday Bash” will take place Sunday, Dec. 11, the day Rubin, a longtime Santa Monica resident, activist and Big Blue Bus rider, turns 62. Rubin said he would like his birthday — when he will finally get his Big Blue Bus senior citizen discount card — to be a time to encourage even more people, particularly seniors, to use the bus and Tide shuttle service provided by the award-winning Santa Monica Big Blue Bus.
The free-to-the-public birthday bash and highlighted cake cutting ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. at 1457 Third Street Promenade at the dinosaur fountain area across from the Broadway Deli.
Speakers at the birthday event will include Big Blue Bus administrators and drivers; Santa Monica elected officials; environmental group leaders; and Santa Monica bus-riding residents.
The specially-decorated cake is being provided courtesy of the Broadway Deli. Rubin, who has never had a car, and is a staunch environmental and alternative transportation advocate, urges people to try to drive a little bit less and take the bus a little bit more.
