A center-cut, no-fat review of what was said this past week by folks who make the news right here at home
“I think it’s pretty shocking to me as a Democrat.” — City Councilman Bobby Shriver, who failed to garner an endorsement from the Santa Monica Democratic Club.
“I was trying to keep my eye on them at all times and one of the girls asked, ‘why are you looking at me.’ It was con-frontational, it was a little scary and you knew they wanted to rob you. “But what could you do?” — Roxanna Cervantes, owner of clothing boutique Life/Style. Her store has recently been the victim of shoplifting.
“It has the greatest potential to eliminate traffic from the San Fernando Valley.” — Santa Monica resident Philip Schwartz regarding the proposed Subway to the Sea project.
“Off camera, top Republican strategist Mike Murphy called the Palin nomination ‘political b.s.’ McCain clearly played the chick card to get Hillary voters. In the VP debate, Joe Biden should say, ‘Governor, I served with Hillary Clinton and you’re no Hillary Clinton.’” — SMDP columnist Jack Neworth writing in “Laughing Matters.”
“It’s much more efficient. We don’t have to use personnel for chalking tire after tire and going back and finding all the work is for nothing.” — Santa Monica Police Department’s Lt. Kathy Keane regarding a proposal to purchase monitoring technology to keep tabs on parked vehicles.
“This is an enormous shot in the arm for an organization that has done so much for this community.” — Nat Trives, president of the Santa Monica Symphony’s Board of Directors, regarding a $100,000 donation made by the estate of the late Mary Elizabeth Booth.
“No one likes the idea of their home dropping in value, but if you need or want to move you have to get past the ‘I could have made ‘X’ more’ mentality.” — SMDP business columnist writing in “Real Estate 101.”
“Let me tell you an old bartender secret that guarantees instant service: When you go to a crowded nightclub or hangout, go to the bar and place your order. Don’t run a tab. When you are presented with the first bill, drop a 40 percent tip. When you show up for a second round, that bartender (or waitress) will be on you like white on rice.” — SMDP columnist Steve Breen writing in “Going Postal.”
“When the world discovers this place it is going to be packed.” — SMDP food columnist Merv Hecht writing about Wokcano (a new Asian eatery) in “Restaurant Snap Shot.”
