Santa Monica ‘Empty Nest’ can be beaten

Published:

By Sheila Raznick Santa Monica

I was interested to read Melody Hanatani’s article about ‘Empty Nest Syndrome’ (“Empty nest leaves a void,” Oct. 30). This is not a new phenomena, but certainly different from the early ’70s, when our “nest” became empty.

Today, with cell phones and e-mails, the youngsters have never actually left, but are still very closely connected to their parents.

In our day, although of course we missed our children, we also missed the telephone constantly ringing and the hordes of teenagers who always seemed to be in our home.

Many marriages fail at this point in life, so stay interested in each other and find a way to give yourself to your community.

Life always has meaning. It runs in stages and ‘empty nest’ is just one of the stages. It certainly is not the end of life — but rather, a new beginning
