"The Peach: A Memoir of Trauma, Survival, and Forgiveness" by Melissa H. Cronin will be released Oct. 15 by Mnemosyne Books, a new imprint of Saint Julian Press.
The memoir returns to an ordinary summer morning in July 2003, when Cronin was reaching for a ripe peach at the Santa Monica Farmers' Market. In the next instant, an out-of-control vehicle tore through the crowd, killing 10 people and injuring dozens more. Cronin survived, but her recovery became a far longer journey.
Cronin chronicles the years that followed — shaped by traumatic brain injury, grief, fractured memory, resilience and the difficult work of forgiveness. The book moves beyond catastrophe toward a meditation on identity, compassion and rebuilding a life after loss. Throughout, she bears witness to acts of kindness from strangers, medical workers, friends, family and fellow survivors, suggesting that healing is rarely an individual achievement.
The memoir has drawn praise from fellow authors. Mira Bartok, author of "The Memory Palace," called it a reminder that some people still choose to turn toward the light. Carolyn Roy-Bornstein said Cronin captures the universal core of a brain injury's world-shattering, transformational experience. Marianne Leone described the book as a remarkable story of sudden loss, recovery and the redemptive power of forgiveness, written in luminous prose. Madeleine Tobias, a retired psychotherapist who treated trauma survivors for more than 30 years, said the book offers hope that healing is possible with the right support and time.
Cronin is a former neonatal intensive care nurse, gardener and nature artist. She earned an MFA in writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts, and her work has received a Notable Mention in The Best American Essays and support from the Vermont Studio Center and the Vermont Arts Council. She and her husband live in Vermont's Champlain Islands.
The Peach will be available in paperback and e-book wherever books are sold starting Oct. 15. Print and e-book editions can be pre-ordered now from major retailers.
