The city of Santa Monica will host a ceremony Aug. 10 to commemorate the renaming of a portion of Vicente Terrace to Silas White Street.
The event is free and open to the public. It will take place at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 10, at 1846 Main St.
"I am proud of the innovative and critical work that Santa Monica is doing in the restorative justice space," Mayor Caroline Torosis said. "This is about more than property. It's about truth, accountability, and taking real action to repair the legacy of racial injustice in our city."
The renaming follows action by the City Council last year to enter into a settlement agreement with the family of the late Silas White, a prominent Black entrepreneur in Santa Monica in the 1950s who envisioned opening the Ebony Beach Club for Black families to enjoy.
The settlement also established Oct. 12 as Silas White Day in Santa Monica and aligns with the city's recent establishment of a Restorative Justice Program.
