Saul Cohen Santa Monica Quit criminalizing the homeless

Published:

By Richard Hirsch

I was both disgusted and saddened to read David Pisarra’s column (SMDP, March 30, page 7). Mr. Pisarra argues that his unfortunate break-ins and vandalism are attributable to “the disgusting behavior of our homeless population.” As an attorney, Mr. Pisarra should know not to accuse anyone unless he can back up his allegations. He suggests no evidence that a homeless person is responsible in his case. I have also been the victim of crimes in the past, including a break-in at my house. It so happens that neighborhood kids were responsible. Perhaps Mr. Pisarra should canvas his own neighbors before he heaps blame on those less fortunate in the community whose only crime may be not having a place to live. Too often the homeless are bashed for all the ills of society. We should be directing our resources to ending homelessness.
