It’s time to kick up your heels in the name of cultural diversity. Folklórico de SMC — the acclaimed world dance company that has performed throughout California and Mexico — will present a program of world dance — One Pulse — at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, and Saturday, May 20, at the Santa Monica College Concert Hall, 1900 Pico Blvd.
On the program will be dances from South America, Mexico, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the United States. They will include salsa, flamenco, hip-hop, jazz and ballet.
“The intent of this program is not solely to entertain, but to represent the diversity of cultures that is a proud part of our college community,” said dance professor Judith Douglas, Folklórico de SMC co-artistic director. “All of the performed dances are kept in their authentic forms. They preserve particular world cultures as well as educate our students and audiences of their beauty and legitimacy.”
The faculty and guest choreographers are distinguished professors and artists that include an Emmy Award nominee and the “Salsa Diva of Los Angeles.” They are Judith Douglas; Raquel Ramirez, who is also Folklórico co-artistic director, Laura Canellias; Angelina Meany; Jeffrey Page; and Alejandro Ruiz.
Student choreographers are Tara Adkins, Gabriel Avila, Kimberly Bent, Gerardo Ferrero, Rosalba Jasso, Jasmine Henderson, Israel Meza, Tenneh Powers, and Monique Zierling.
The Folklórico de SMC — with its performances, music and costumes — seeks to train performers, educate audiences, and disseminate information about the rich history and lore of Latino and other cultures.
The troupe has toured extensively throughout Mexico and California for more than 16 years at schools, festivals and special events. Tickets are $15. Call (310) 434-3000. School district hires new staff
