Santa Monica College will celebrate the release of the fall 2026 Santa Monica Review with a launch party and readings by recent contributors Oct. 25.

The event runs from 5 to 7 p.m. in The Edye at the SMC Performing Arts Center, 1310 11th St. Tickets are a suggested $10 donation at smc.edu/tickets. Refreshments will be served, copies of the Review will be sold and free parking is available. Seating is first come, first served.

Review editor Andrew Tonkovich, whose work includes “Keeping Tahoe Blue,” will emcee. Dylan Landis, author of “List of All Possible Desires” and an alum of SMC’s fiction workshop, will offer a welcome. Contributors Mary Ore, Kareem Tayyar, Richard Wirick and Monona Wali will read.

Published twice a year, the Review features established and emerging writers with a focus on West Coast narratives. It is the only nationally distributed literary magazine published by a U.S. community college.

The fall issue includes 14 new short stories, most by West Coast writers, and cover art by elin o’Hara slavick, whose work includes “Holding History in Our Hand.”

“I’m once again especially pleased to offer writing by first-time-in-print writers,” Tonkovich said.

Newcomers include Ore, an SMC creative writing workshop alum, and established fiction writers Brian Conlon and Joshua Brorby. Conlon’s “Dead Rat” turns a trip to the dentist into torturously funny urban misadventures, while Brorby’s “Eastern Churches” is a ghostly family reunion tale told by a dying narrator about his father, Mr. Harms.

Returning contributors include Wali, Wirick, Jeffrey Moskowitz and San Diego poet Bryan D. Price. Other contributors include Tayyar, Ashley Farmer, San Francisco writer Olga Zilberbourg, Pushcart Prize winner Gregory Tower and Shane Castle, an editor at the Alaska Quarterly Review.

Jim Krusoe founded the Review in fall 1988 with encouragement from then-SMC President Richard Moore. Work from the journal has appeared in the Pushcart Prize, Best American Short Stories and PEN/O. Henry anthologies.

The Review is sold at smc.edu/sm_review, the SMC Campus Store at 1900 Pico Blvd., Beyond Baroque and Small World Books in Venice, and other area booksellers. Issues cost $14 each or $25 for both issues of the year. More information is available at smc.edu/sm_review or by calling 949-235-8193. Events are subject to change or cancellation.
