The Santa Monica College Emeritus Art Gallery will open a free, online-only exhibition of work by artist and SMC Emeritus student Lynn Strother on Oct. 29. A live Zoom launch event will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
The exhibition shows a range of approaches but focuses mostly on photorealistic colored pencil and pan pastel drawings. A link to the opening reception will go live at event time at smc.edu/emeritusgallery.
Gallery curator Jesse Benson will host the reception and talk with Strother about selected works.
“The material mastery and rendering acumen on display in this exhibition are, without exaggeration, unsurpassed in the history of Emeritus Gallery,” Benson said. “Prepare to be amazed.”
Strother has studied art at Emeritus for nine years, since retiring from a career as an association executive in 2017. She previously studied at UCLA Extension and Brentwood Art Center. She enjoys making realistic drawings of people, animals and plants. She began working in colored pencil a little over a year ago, and it is now her favorite medium.
Starting at 5 p.m. Oct. 29, the exhibition can be viewed at any time at smc.edu/emeritusgallery by clicking the exhibition link. The link leads to an album on a public Facebook page, and a Facebook account is not required.
SMC founded Emeritus in 1975 as a noncredit program for older adults interested in lifelong learning. It offers more than 120 noncredit classes and special programs and serves more than 3,000 students a year.
