Curtains will open for Madison Theater

After five years of planning, a 535-seat theater in Santa Monica has been approved and will be built next year.

The Santa Monica College board of trustees this week unanimously approved the $18 million project, which is called Madison Theater and will be located at 11th Street and Santa Monica Boulevard.

“It’s an entitlement,” said Don Girard, marketing manager for SMC. “This allows the project to proceed.”

Only one person spoke out against the theater at the board’s Monday meeting.

That person, a nearby resident, said the amount of cars generated from theater patrons will not be adequately served by the project’s 301 parking spaces. Despite that the surrounding area is reserved for residents in what’s called a “preferential parking zone,” the resident said cars are likely to park on the street illegally.
