In what UCLA officials said was highly unusual, five Santa Monica College transfer students have each won prestigious UCLA Regents scholarships, which they will use when they begin classes at the Westwood campus on Sept. 30.
Julia Dobrovolsky, Alexander Gabrovsky, Kristen Glasgow, Jiuan-Ru Jennifer Lai and Christoph Seitz will each receive $5,500 a year with additional funds available based on need. Recipients are selected on the basis of demonstrated academic excellence, leadership and exceptional promise.
“It’s rare for there to be five scholarship recipients from one school in one year,” said Gail Ishino, UCLA’s Financial Aid assistant director. “It’s quite an accomplishment.”
The Regents Scholarship Program, established in 1962, is considered one of the highest honors awarded to students attending UCLA.
