Students at Santa Monica College have recently shown poetic excellence. SMC students captured three awards in the 13th Annual Chinese Poetry Recitation Contest, held recently at California State University, Los Angeles.
Sarah Jacobus and Shunsuke Ito won first-and second-place awards, respectively, in the category of “Participants With No Chinese Background.” Ran Nakayama won third-place honors in the intermediate level of Mandarin. The students are in the second-level Chinese class, taught by SMC Chinese professor Xiaozhou Wu.
Approximately 40 students from four-year universities and two-year colleges competed — including California State University, Los Angeles, University of Southern California, and California State University, Fullerton.
The contest was sponsored by California State University, Los Angeles’ Chinese Studies Center and department of modern languages and literature. Letter carriers make bank deposit
