The Santa Monica College Sustainability Center will host free events Oct. 19-23 for Sustainability Week 2026. They include a seed-starting workshop, a composting tour, a documentary screening and a career conference.
Most events take place on SMC’s main campus, 1900 Pico Blvd. Sponsors include the SMC Associated Students, Eco Action Club, Club Grow and the SMC Sustainability Department.
On Oct. 20, a seed-starting workshop will run from 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in the Organic Garden. It will cover each step of growing a garden from seed, including soil mixing, cell trays, watering, labeling and hardening off.
On Oct. 21, “DamNation, the Problem with Hydropower,” a documentary on the impacts of damming wild rivers and ecosystems, will screen from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Stromberg Hall (HSS 165). Pizza will be provided.
On Oct. 22, a guided tour of SMC’s composting systems runs from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. One system uses more than 400,000 worms to eat through hundreds of pounds of food scraps a week. Participants meet at the Organic Garden and will learn how to put organic waste in the correct bins, which keeps it out of landfills. Sandwiches from Ike’s Love will be provided.
On Oct. 23, the Careers for Good Conference runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at SMC’s Center for Media and Design, 1660 Stewart St. Professionals from values-driven companies, B-Corps and nonprofits will discuss their work. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Companies and organizations interested in participating can email Luke Johnson at johnson_luke@smc.edu.
On Oct. 29, a Sustainable Costume Contest will be held during Club Row, with prizes awarded.
