The Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation is piloting a fee-based, for-credit summer school at Santa Monica High School. Teachers are said to be enthusiastic. Now it’s time to see if students and their parents are, too.
Preliminary Details: • Monday, June 30 – Friday, Aug. 8 (July 4 off). • 8 a.m. —12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. • $600 tuition; textbooks provided. • Limited amount of scholarships are available; based on free and/or reduced-fee lunch qualification. • Courses will be challenging — an entire year curriculum taught in six weeks. • Attendance is mandatory; a student can miss no more than three days. • The grade received is binding unless the class is dropped by end of first week; there are no refunds. • Students may audit the class at the teacher’s discretion. Classes being considered include: Algebra I, biology, chemistry, creative writing (for elective credit), geometry, government, physical education, physics, physiology, psychology, social sciences, social studies, sociology, and Spanish.
Jump Start College (no credit): Students can sign up for one of three two-week classes where students will learn to navigate a college search, complete the common application for UCs, write their college essay, create a resume of activities, and organize a personalized calendar and filing system for tracking their applications.
