Officials with the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District want to remind those who are 65 and over that they can file for a “senior exemption” from Measure R, a parcel tax passed by the voters in February.
Measure R consolidated and replaced two previous parcel taxes known as Measure Y and Measure S, which provided the district with $346 per parcel.
To qualify for the exemption in 2008-09, senior citizens must be 65 years old by June 30, and must own and occupy their properties as their primary residences. Those seniors who have previously received the exemption from the Measure S parcel tax should be sent a form sometime in May. The form must be completed, signed and returned to the district office by July 31. If one does not receive a form by mid-June, they are urged to call Dawn Smithfield at (310) 450-8338, ext. 269. First-time applicants who qualify may call Smithfield to be put on the application mailing list. This application must be completed, signed and returned with two proofs of age and property ownership by July 31.
