The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District welcomed families, staff, community members and education partners to its State of Our Schools event at Santa Monica High School. The evening focused on the district’s progress, priorities and future.

Superintendent Antonio Shelton delivered an address. He shared his vision for the 2026-27 school year and highlighted work across the district to support students and strengthen schools.

Shelton gave updates on key district priorities, including teaching and learning, student success and facilities improvements. He also discussed efforts to create learning environments that meet students’ changing needs.

“State of Our Schools is an opportunity to reflect on our progress and look ahead to what our students and communities need from us next,” Shelton said. “Together, we are focused on creating strong learning experiences, investing in our schools and moving SMMUSD forward.”

The event brought together members of the Santa Monica and Malibu communities to hear directly about the initiatives, investments and goals shaping the district’s future.

After the address, attendees were invited to tour Samohi’s new Exploration Building, one of the district’s newest learning facilities. The building’s spaces are designed to support collaboration, creativity and new approaches to learning.

The event also highlighted the partnerships that support district schools. Community organizations, education partners, civic leaders, families and staff from both Santa Monica and Malibu attended.
