One person on Saturday was arrested for driving under the influence and several others were issued citations after they were stopped in a sobriety checkpoint on Main Street.

The Santa Monica Police Department conducted a driver’s license and sobriety checkpoint in the 2000 block of Main Street between 7 p.m. and midnight. A total of 866 vehicles drove through the checkpoint and 256 vehicles were stopped in a five-hour period.

Funding for the program was provided by a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety, obtained through the California Business, Transportation & Housing Agency. The grant called, “We LEADD,” known as “Westside Law Enforcement Against Drunk Driving,” is designed to improve traffic safety in the community, police said. The goal of the program aims at educating and bringing awareness to the community, while at the same time detecting and removing drunk and irresponsible drivers from the road, police said.
