Solar Santa Monica starts second phase

THE SECOND ERA FOR SOLAR PANELS

Following a successful beginning to the Solar Santa Monica initiative, which seeks to expand solar capacity via photovoltaic panels, City Hall is preparing to embark on phase two of the project.

That phase could be handled by EcoMotion if the council approves a $450,000 contract that will include marketing and public outreach work.

The goal of the second phase, which will last roughly three years, is to install a minimum of 1,500 kilowatts of solar capacity in the city, which would be roughly a 300 percent gain.

Sustainability has long been a goal of City Hall, and that includes teaching good environmental citizenship to its students.

In order to continue teaching environmental values to public school students in Santa Monica, the council is expected to add $50,000 to an existing contract with Heal the Bay.

The nonprofit organization recently hosted more than 700 elementary school children from the Los Angeles area for its annual Coastal Cleanup Day, which included a trip to the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium.
