The University Synagogue in Brentwood will present on Saturday, May 7, world-renowned singer-songwriter Debbie Friedman, who has been called the “Queen of Soul” and “an inspiration for two generations of worship-pers.” Friedman will perform at a special Havdalah service, honoring Rabbi Zachary Shapiro, at 7 p.m. at the synagogue, 11960 Sunset Blvd.

A singer, songwriter and guitarist, Friedman has recorded 19 albums. Originally influenced by American popular music of the 1960s and 1970s — Peter, Paul and Mary, Judy Collins, Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell — she in turn has been influencing younger singers and song-writers with her own style. Her latest release is a double compilation CD and will be available this June. In fact, she is asking her community to vote for their top 10 favorite songs. The winners will appear on the CD.

Although originally from Los Angeles, Friedman lives on the East Coast and rarely makes appearances in Southern California. This is the first of only two scheduled appearances in the area.
