The ink was barely dry on last Monday’s Daily Press with my column about pending changes in maximum speed limits on a number of city streets when my phone started ringing.
This past week, Q-line asked: An article in the Daily Press revealed that crime is on the rise in Santa Monica. The majority of the increase has been fueled by property crimes.

CITY HALL — The economic downturn continues to hurt businesses in Santa Monica where city officials are expecting to see less money come in from the state this month because of declining sales tax revenues.
Thursday, the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education approved a 33-person committee (everyone who applied) to examine the feasibility of an emergency temporary parcel tax to offset reductions in state funding and explore another school construction bond measure.

MICHIGAN AVENUE — There won’t be a cancer-surviving superstar cyclist or sights of the French countryside but the inaugural Tour da Arts in Santa Monica promises to highlight some of the biggest cultural landmarks in the city.
In January the City Council banned smoking from common areas of apartment buildings and condominiums throughout Santa Monica. The law went into effect in February, though in my building the signs didn’t go up until July.
