SAMOHI — Chad Wheeler may go from being a Viking to a Trojan. Santa Monica High School’s Wheeler gave a verbal commitment to USC this week, after previously agreeing to play for Arizona State next season.

St. Monica’s football team lost to nearby Malibu, 17-3, Saturday on the road. The loss drops St. Monica to 1-2 on the season. Malibu improved to 1-2. Next for St.
MALIBU — St. Monica’s football team needs a little distance. After a lopsided 61-0 loss to South Hills in the season’s second week last Friday, the Mariners (1-1) and their first-year coach could use a win right about now.

MEMORIAL PARK — Pacifica Christian’s girls’ volleyball team swept crosstown St. Monica in three games on Monday at Memorial Park. The Seawolves dominated in winning 25-13, 25-16 and 25-9 en route to improving to 2-0 on the young season.
SAMOHI — Retirement from coaching didn’t last too long for Debbie Skaggs. The former long-time Santa Monica High School head coach has decided to return to the softball team after taking a one-year break.
ELAC — It’s fourth and goal on the six yard line, East Los Angeles College’s ball in double overtime. They pitch it right to the running back who’s stopped for a loss of three yards by Santa Monica College cornerback Brian Hawthorne.
Santa Monica-based teams had very different nights on Friday. Santa Monica High School opened the season with a 35-0 win over Leuzinger at Santa Monica College’s Corsair Field, but the other 11-main team in town didn’t fare as well.
WEST COVINA — St. Monica’s new football coach seems like the type who isn’t afraid of a fight. During the off-season, when Adam Guerra was making his schedule, he decided to setup an early game against a bigger school to see what his team is capable of.
