When I heard that our council planned to replace our beautiful ficus trees with deciduous trees, I could not believe it. When I lived in Massachusetts, we had no choice. If we wanted flowering or fruit-bearing trees, not to mention our magnificent fall foliage, we had to suffer through a season with dead-appearing trees. Here in California we have a choice. Who would choose a tree on their property that looked dead for months at a time? Just walk along Santa Monica Boulevard between Fifth and Sixth streets, and you will see what I mean. We must stop this ruthless destruction of nature’s way of keeping Santa Monica green and healthy. If we allow this on Second and Fourth streets. Today, it may be your street tomorrow.
