Get ready for the swishing of skirts and the tapping of heels. Folklórico de SMC — the world dance company that has performed throughout California and Mexico — will present a program of world dance — East-West, Now and Then — this month. On the program will be dances from China, Indonesia, Africa and Mexico, as well as Latin mambo and hip-hop numbers. The Folklórico de SMC — with its performances, music and costumes — seeks to train performers, educate audiences, and disseminate information about the history and lore of Latino and other cultures. This troupe has toured extensively throughout Mexico and California for more than 15 years — at schools, festivals and special events.
The faculty and guest choreographers are Judith Douglas and Raquel Ramirez, who is also Folklórico co-artistic director, Ron Brown, Sergio Reyna and Sri Suslowati. Student choreographers are Gabriel Avila and Jing Li.
The performance will take place at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 20 and 21, at the Lincoln Middle School Auditorium, 1501 California Ave. Tickets are $15 general admission and $10 for SMC students with I.D. Call (310) 434-3000 for more information.
