The Venice Whaler, the beachfront bar and grill at the foot of Washington Boulevard, has temporarily stopped serving alcohol because of a paperwork error, owner Mike Dobson told SMDP on Sunday, Oct. 18.

Dobson said the pause was caused by a technical error involving paperwork that was not submitted on time. He said the bar did not lose its liquor license and is not going out of business.

The Venice location remains open with its full food menu. In a statement shared with SMDP on Sunday, the bar said it is offering $3 pizza slices and a $10 burger and fries combo in Venice while alcohol service is paused. Guests who dine there now will receive a 50% off coupon for a future visit once alcohol service resumes, according to the statement.

“Every visit helps support our team, and we can’t wait to welcome you back for the celebration,” the statement said.

The bar’s sister location, the Santa Monica Whaler at 101 Broadway in downtown Santa Monica, remains open with full food and bar service.

The Venice Whaler has operated at 10 Washington Blvd., near the Venice Fishing Pier, since 1944.
