Although the thought of patio dining seems like a romantic idea, I believe, that expanding it outside the confines of each eating venue would only create more congestion on the Third Street Promenade (SMDP, May 3, page 1). Were this idea to be implemented it might be more practical to enhance the promenade itself by creating an environment which is more like a park.
The promenade is more in need of color as in more foliage and not more seating for diners. I believe that the city of Santa Monica should focus more on being accessible to a broad spectrum of people. It would behoove the City Council and its members to cope with the increasing influx of homeless people who make the promenade their home during each day.
It shouldn’t be a place to bring their sole possessions and utilize the benches for napping. The benches are for sitting on. Also, it’s unfortunate to say, but on many days a cesspool smell permeates the air. Mostly, I would venture to guess that some homeless people have few alternatives, but to utilize whatever it takes to relieve themselves. Not only does it create an unsanitary health environment, but it makes one wonder why Santa Monica doesn’t examine creating more accessible restroom facilities other than those which exist in the parking structures. In order for us to be proud of the city in which we live, it’s important to push the City Council to act in the best interests of its residents, not simply on business interests.
