CITYWIDE — The day that all smokers have dreaded is finally here.

A sweeping city ordinance that bans smoking throughout much of Santa Monica’s outdoor areas takes effect today, after City Council adopted the measure on Oct. 24.

Smokers will no longer be able to light up in places such as public parks, beaches, the Third Street Promenade, the Santa Monica Pier, Farmers’ Markets, waiting areas, outdoor restaurants and bars, and within 20 feet of any entrance, exit or open window of a building that is not a private residence.

Smoking is also banned within 25 feet of Santa Monica College.

Twenty feet is approximately eight to 10 paces, according to the City Attorney’s Office, which posted an advisory on its Web site this week.

There will be designated smoking areas on the pier.

Fines for those who can’t fight the urge is a hefty $250.
