UCLA is a haven for musical refugees

Published:

It’s easy to take no notice to the band name of the Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars. What exactly does it mean to be an all star refugee? In the case of the six musicians that escaped Sierra Leone’s civil war, it means spreading a message of peace through film and music. Or does it mean playing some fine West African music that fuses roots, reggae, and traditional folk? Or both? After all, you’re not an all-star for nothing.

The Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars’ show takes place Saturday, Feb. 16 at 8 p.m. at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. Tickets range from $15 (student) to $36. For more information, visit www.uclalive.org. NE
